Work order line 03: Kitchen and Bath

Disposals, dishwashers, backsplash and fixtures, measured and set

From toilets to sinks to faucet fixtures, John installs the right look for a Knoxville bathroom or kitchen. Small updates can make a big impact.

Chapter 01

Where kitchens and baths wear out first

Most kitchen and bath calls begin with something that has quietly given up. A garbage disposal that was hooked up years ago and never looked at again. A dishwasher connection that has started to weep under the sink. A backsplash tile that cracked and let water in behind it. Fixtures that look tired next to everything else in the room.

John Blakemore installs the disposals, stoves and ovens, and dishwashers. He also does the tile, flooring and backsplash, the cabinet and countertop replacements, and the small fittings that make a kitchen work: utensil trays, wine racks, rubbish bins.

He has been an electrician for 35 years, so the appliance circuit behind a new stove or dishwasher gets the same attention as the tile around it. If the job turns out to be wiring or a leaking supply line, it moves over to his electrical and plumbing lines without a second contractor.

Measure first, check the rough-in, then set and seal

The order of the work matters more than the speed of it. John measures the opening before anything is bought or cut, checks that the supply, drain or circuit behind the wall will actually meet the new piece, and only then sets it. A disposal or dishwasher that fits on paper and not on the cabinet floor costs a second trip.

Lighting is part of the same walk-through. On a recent LED upgrade he replaced old fluorescent troffers, advised the homeowner on LED K ratings, and put two new fixtures in the kitchen. The homeowner chose an Edison-lamp pendant over the island, and a panel stained to match the crown molding filled the old 2 by 4 foot opening.

Chapter 03

After the last caulk line goes down

A tile job is finished when the grout is sealed and the caulk lines are tight where wall meets tub or counter meets splash, because that is where water gets in later. John closes those out as part of the job and tells you what to watch for as the new work settles.

Everything carries a 1-year guarantee on all labor, and his contracts are only paid in full when the finished work is to your complete satisfaction. Estimates are free, and if you are not sure whether a worn fixture is worth replacing, that is a fair question to ask on the phone.
